18 hr. Empowering for Category III TeachersThis online course provides ESOL training for Category III professionals, who work with students, parents, school personnel, and school communities. All personnel who come in contact with students are required to successfully complete 18 hours of ESOL-approved in-service training. This course is designed to enable participants to increase their knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of school professionals in Florida regarding English Language Learners (ELL) students. ESOL Strategies for Category III Professionals is a rigorous, distance-learning course designed to insure that professional, Category III, personnel are knowledgeable about various teaching methods, curriculum, linguistics, cross-cultural communication, assessment and evaluation of ESOL students. This course is designed to enable professionals to increase their knowledge and understandings regarding English Language Learners (ELL) students. It is designed to prepare social workers, psychologists, music and physical education teachers, and all the other professional personnel in schools, with the knowledge and skills that they need to help English Language Learners (ELL) students to succeed in school, at work and in the community. As the number of English Language Learners (ELL) students continues to increase, the knowledge obtained in this course will empower a large group of educational professionals to work more effectively with these students. Participants will learn to recognize the best educational practices and will then use these practices to insure English Language Learners (ELL) students receive the help and instruction they need. |
| ESOL for Administrators ESOL for Administrators is a distance learning course designed to ensure that administrative personnel address diversity by determining the appropriate activities for ESOL students. This course is designed to enable administrators to increase their knowledge of their roles and responsibilities in Florida's schools regarding ELL (English Language Learners) students. It is designed to prepare principals and other administrators with the skills that they need to help these students to succeed in school, work and in the community. Many assignments revolve around classroom applications. Participants will be given an opportunity to apply what they learn during the online sessions to a real school situation. |
ESOL for Guidance Counselors ESOL for Guidance Counselors is a distance learning course designed to empower counselors to lead their schools as the ELL (English Language Learners) population continues to increase. Counselors will be prepared to ensure ELL students are accurately placed and provided with a challenging instructional program. They will learn the best practices and requirements for the placement of students with secondary credits from their native countries. Upon completion of this course, counselors will also be able to recognize the effects culture and social economic status have on academic performance and test results. Many assignments revolve around classroom applications. Participants will be given an opportunity to apply what they learn during online sessions to real situations in their guidance position. |
Cross Cultural Communications & Understandings Teachers will identify the major cultures represented by the ELL (English Language Learners) students in Florida public schools in order to develop better cross-cultural understanding among all groups and to appropriately meet their special needs within the school and community setting. Many assignments revolve around classroom applications. Participants will be given an opportunity to apply what they learn during the online sessions to a real situation in their school or community. Curriculum & Materials Development for ESOL Teachers Curriculum and Materials Development is a distance learning course designed to improve and enhance the teacher's knowledge of ESOL curriculum. The teachers will gain knowledge of materials appropriate for use with ELL (English Language Learners) students.Many assignments revolve around classroom applications. Participants will be given an opportunity to apply what they learn during the online sessions to a real situation in their content area. There are no prerequisites for this course |
Empowering ESOL Teachers Empowering is a distance learning course designed to assist teachers in developing attitudes, skills, and knowledge which will enable to identify students who are English Language Learners (ELL) and to provide effective instruction for ELL students. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to modify curriculum and offer instruction and evaluation compatible with student language diversity. Many assignments revolve around classroom applications. Participants will be given an opportunity to apply what they learn during the online sessions to a real situation in their content area. Applied Linguistics Applied Linguistics is a distance learning course designed to help teachers acquire a greater understanding of the structure of English from a modern day linguistic perspective. It is designed to prepare teachers to analyze the structure of English in contrast with the language (s) of the target population in a given class. Methods of Teaching Methods for teaching ESOL is a distance learning course designed to help teachers identify and apply ESOL methodologies and approaches in the teaching of English Language students. Upon completion of this course teachers will be able to demonstrate awareness of the central role of ESOL within the total school curriculum and identify cognitive approaches to second language learning. Testing & Evaluation ESOL Testing and Evaluation is a distance learning course that will enable the teachers to demonstrate the ability to assess initial English language proficiency for placement and instruction. Teachers will be able to identify and or develop instruments to determine the ability and instructional placement of students to function in regular classes for English speakers. Many assignments revolve around classroom applications. Participants will be given an opportunity to apply testing principles that they learn during the online sessions to a real situation in their content area.
